Introduction to Production Planning with SAP S/4HANA While it’s true that today’s logistics and supply chain management is far more volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (due to globalized supply chains and shorter product lifecycles), production planning in SAP S/4HANA offers several planning tools to help reduce volatility, uncer- tainty, complexity, and ambiguity. A company that is in the business of manufacturing a product and selling it to custom- ers goes through the rigor of production planning and then production execution. Pro- duction planning (PP) with SAP S/4HANA plays a critical role in the logistics and supply chain functions of a company to accomplish just this. PP enables a company to benefit from historical data when preparing a forecast that can then be used in sales, opera- tions, materials, capacity, and further PP. From an initial sales plan or sales orders from customers to the highly integrated and complex chain of interdependent activities in logistics in the SAP S/4HANA system, PP shows its strength, both in planning and execution. It seamlessly integrates with the sales, procurement, quality, maintenance, projects, human capital, finance, and con- trolling functions of a company. This chapter provides an overview of the three manufacturing types: discrete, process, and repetitive. It follows this with an overview of some of the important production plan- ning tools available in SAP S/4HANA. It also highlights the importance of production planning in the product-costing business process. It also provides a table comparing the features and functionalities available in SAP ERP (the predecessor of SAP S/4HANA) with those in SAP S/4HANA. Finally, it provides a table that compares the different production types and gives a brief overview of another planning tool offered by SAP: SAP Integrated Business Planning for Supply Chain (SAP IBP).
